Exposure-Response

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-010510

1. The relationship between the intensity, frequency, or duration of exposure to a stressor and the intensity, frequency, or duration of the biological response.

2. A model of that relationship. This term is similar to concentration-response and stressor-response.

3. Exposure-response has been used by EPA when referring to hazards that are not necessarily pathogens. For example, exposure to indicator bacteria may be correlated with a response (gastrointestinal illness), but the indicator is not the cause of the response. Refering to a “dose of indicators” is misleading because it implies the indicator is the causative agent of the health endpoint.
