Externality

1. A consequence of an economic activity that is experienced by unrelated third parties. An externality can be either positive (such as a scenic view) or negative (such as pollution).

2. Occurs when the actions of one individual (or firm) have a direct, unintentional and uncompensated effect on the well-being of other individuals or the profits of other firms.
