Fertilizers

1. Substance that adds inorganic or organic plant nutrients to soil and improves its ability to grow crops, trees, or other vegetation.
2. Substances, such as chemicals or animal manure, used to provide nutrients to help plants grow. Many people use fertilizers on their lawns and gardens.
3. Nitrogen- and phosphate-rich chemical compounds that are used to increase the productivity of croplands; fertilizer production usually includes the use and disposal of petrochemicals.
