1. The upper surface of the stratum underlying a coal seam. In coals that were formed in persistent swamp environments, the floor is typically a bed of clay, known as "underclay," representing the soil in which the trees or other coal-forming swamp vegetation was rooted.

2. The rock underlying a stratified or nearly horizontal deposit, corresponding to the foot wall of more steeply dipping deposits. A horizontal, flat ore body.
