1. The vertical distance from the normal water surface to the top of the confining wall.

2. The vertical distance from the sand surface to the underside of a trough in a sand filter. (This distance is also called AVAILABLE EXPANSION.)

3. Vertical distance from the normal water surface to the top of a confining wall.

4. Vertical distance from the sand surface to the underside of a trough in a sand filter.

5. Vertical distance between the top of a tank or surface impoundment dike and the surface of the hazardous substance contained therein. Freeboard is intended to prevent overtopping resulting from normal or abnormal operations, wind and wave action, rainfall, and/or run - on.

6. The distance between the highest possible wastewater level in a manure storage/treatment structure and the top of the structure. Freeboard is an important design parameter in designing lagoons, ponds, storage basins, digesters, and other manure storage and treatment structures.
