Fugitive emissions

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-011826

1. Air pollutants released to the air other than those from stacks or vents; typically small releases from leaks in plant equipment such as valves, pump seals, flanges, sampling connections, etc.

2. Emissions not caught by a capture system.

3. Air pollutants released to the air other than those from stacks or vents, including small releases from leaking plant equipment such as valves, pump seals, flanges, or sampling connections, and large open area releases such as from landfills, waste ponds, or unpaved roads.

4. Unintended gas leaks from the production processing, transmission, and/or transportation of fossil fuels, CFCs from refrigeration leaks, SF₆ from electrical power distributor, etc.

5. On Form R, facilities must report to TRI the medium to which their chemicals are released. Fugitive releases are releases of a chemical to the air that are not released through stacks, vents, ducts, pipes, or any other confined air stream.
