U.S. Forest Service usage. Sites and areas which have been designated by the Forest Service as containing important evidence and remains of the life and activities of early settlers and others who used or visited the area or the sites where important events took place. Examples are battlegrounds, remnants of mining camps, old cemeteries, important pioneer roads and trails, and early trading sites. (U.S. Forest Serv., FSM 2361.22, July 1973)
