1. A small, narrow opening, recess, indentation, or other entrance into a coastline or shore of a lake or river through which water penetrates landward; commonly refers to a waterway between two barrier islands that connects the sea and a lagoon.
2. An arm of the sea (or other body of water) that is long compared to its width, and that may extend a considerable distance inland.
3. Inlets are narrow constrictions through which water flows. The term is commonly used to describe gaps between barrier islands that allow tidal exchange with the adjacent - more enclosed - bays, lagoons, or marshes.
