Isolate refers to a laboratory maintained stock or controlled propagation through host passages source of microorganisms. Isolates are used in the volunteer human feeding studies. In this context, it should not be implied that these isolates represent clonal populations of pathogens. There may be genetic variation within a stock batch and between generations.
