1. The muscular and cartilage structure situated at the top of the trachea (windpipe) and below the root of the tongue, functioning as sphincter into the trachea and as the organ of voice
2. The cartilaginous structure of the respiratory tract between the pharynx and the trachea. It contains elastic vocal cords required for sound production.
3. The area of the throat containing the vocal cords and used for breathing, swallowing, and talking.
