longshore current

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-016035

1. A near-shore current that flows parallel to the shore.

2. An ocean current in the littoral zone that moves parallel to the shoreline; produced by waves approaching at an angle to the shoreline.

3. A current that moves parallel to or at an oblique angle to the shoreline, carrying water and often transporting soft sediments downstream. Prevailing wind and wave directions can persist in a longshore direction for long periods, and are commonly responsible for the formation of spits, bars and many barrier islands.
