Magnaporthe grisea

Blast disease of rice caused by the filamentous ascomycete Magnaporthe otyzae (Magnaporthe grisea [T.T. Hebert) M.E. Barn is a continuous threat to rice production and global food supply (Lee 1994). M. oryzae is also the causal agent for a number of other cereal diseases including wheat blast disease. The fungus can infect plants through leaves as well as the roots and is well known for its rapid adaptability (Kawasaki 2004).
