1. 3) Data about data or data elements, possibly including their data descriptions, and data about data ownership, access paths, access rights and data volatility. [ISO/IEC 2382-17:1999] NOTE: any data used to aid the identification, definition, description, use, location, etc. of resources. (https://www.ifla.org/g/cataloguing/digital-libraries-metadata-resources/)
2. Data about the data, that is, the description of the data resources, its characteristics, location, usage, and so on. Metadata is used to identify, describe, and define user data.
3. Information that describes the data and the quality criteria associated with their generation.
4. Metadata is data about data. In a database, metadata is the information, such as author, title, and journal title, that accompanies all entries.
5. Summary information about data, such as format, structure, version, or quality of the data.
6. A definition or description of data. In essence it's data about data, but at a higher, more general level. For instance, if a Web site/document contains specific data on water temperatures in the Potomac River, metadata data about this might be "water", "temperature", and "Potomac River".
7. A file of information which captures the basic characteristics of a data or information resource; representing the who, what, when, where, why and how of the data resource; geospatial metadata are used to document geographic digital resources such as Geographic Information System (GIS) files, geospatial databases, and earth imagery.
8. Set of attributes that provide description and meaning to data.
9. Data about data or data elements, possibly including their data descriptions, and data about data ownership, access paths, access rights and data volatility. [ISO/IEC 2382-17:1999] NOTE: any data used to aid the identification, definition, description, use, location, etc. of resources. (http://www.ifla.org/II/metadata.htm)
10. Data that defines and describes other data. [ISO/IEC 11179-3:2003]
11. Data that describe the content, lineage, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. They are “data about data.”
12. Structured information that describe content, data resources, or objects and help locate, use, understand, share, and manage these information sources. Metadata should answer questions about information (content and/or data) such as its purpose, means of creation or collection, date of creation or collection, name of the author/creator, peer-reviewed publisher; and, for data in particular, characteristics of the resource (i.e., raw data/in original form or how the data were changed), what they were used for, and their use limitations.
13. Set of attributes that provide description and meaning to data. RCS records contain resource metadata, or descriptive information about the resource, such as name, version, steward and type.
14. File of information which captures the basic characteristics of a data or information resource; representing the who, what, when, where, why and how of the data resource
15. Structured, digital records that describe the content, data resources, and other information needed to help locate, use, understand, share and manage public access to manuscripts and associated data. Metadata should provide information (content and/or data) about the data's purpose, means of creation or collection, date of creation or collection; the name of the author/creator; the peer-reviewed publisher; and, for data in particular, the characteristics of the resource (i.e., raw data in its original form or how the data were changed), what they were used for and their use limitations, and quality assurance. Where possible, the metadata record should provide a link to the location where the full text and associated supplemental materials are available. Metadata records describing geospatial datasets should follow the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) or International Standards for Organization (ISO) metadata standards when possible.
16. Data or information that describes other data. Examples include data that describe how or where the data were collected, whether or not the data comply with agreed-upon data standards, or how the data will be used.
17. Structured information that describes, explains, locates, or otherwise makes it easier to retrieve, use, or manage an information resource.
