1. Metals include elements with a metallic luster and are found on and beneath the earth's surface, such as iron, manganese, lead, cadmium, zinc, nickel, gold and mercury.

2. Metals can enter waterways from factories, mining, and runoff from urban areas, as well as from natural processes such as erosion of soil and rocks. At high levels, metals such as arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, selenium, and zinc can be toxic to aquatic animals and humans.
