minimum infective dose

This term was intended to indicate the lowest dose that would cause infection in an individual and assumed that there was a threshold dose. This term generally considered to be obsolete because one microorganism is believed to be capable of causing infection in a susceptible individual. However, it should be noted that infection does not imply symptomatic illness.
