Most Probable Number

1. The most probable number of coliform-group organisms per unit volume of sample water, expressed as the number of organisms per 100 mL of sample water.

2. An estimate of microbial density per unit volume of water sample, based on probability theory.

3. A statistically derived estimate of the presence of microorganisms based on the presence or absence of growth in serially diluted samples.
