Natural Capital

1. An extension of the economic concept of capital (manufactured means of production) to ecosystem goods and services. Natural capital is thus the stock of natural ecosystems that yields a flow of valuable ecosystem goods or services into the future.

2. An extension of the economic concept of physical capital -- produced assets such as buildings, machinery, and equipment that are used in the production of economic goods and services -- to ecosystem goods and services. Natural capital is the stock of natural ecosystems that yields a flow of valuable ecosystem goods or services into the future.
