Nested Data

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-018444

A nested study is a research design in which the response to be measured (such as developmental effects in pups) is hierarchically embedded (i.e., nested) within the levels of another factor (such as a particular dose of chemical given to the mother). In a nested study with a group of animals, for example, a cohort of dams may be dosed with a chemical, after which each dam will produce a litter of pups. Developmental effects in the pups such as malformations or body weight will be observed, and the observations would be considered nested data, with litter nested within dose group. (Observations made in the dams should be considered cohort data.)
