Non-aqueous phase liquid

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-018749

  1. 1. Contaminants that remain undiluted as the original bulk liquid in the subsurface, e.g., spilled oil.

    2. Hydrocarbons that exist as a separate immiscible phase when in contact with water or air. Differences in the physical and chemical properties of water and NAPL result in the formation of a physical interface between the two fluids which prevent the two fluids from mixing. NAPLs are typically classified as either light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) which have densities less than that of water, or dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) which have densities greater than that of water.

    3. Contaminants that remain as the original bulk liquid in the subsurface.

    4. Contaminants that remain as the original bulk liquid in the subsurface. (see also free product)

  2. Elements or compounds in the liquid phase other than water. This phase is immiscible in water. Examples include petroleum hydrocarbons, like gasoline, and solvents such as trichloroethylene.

  3. Hydrocarbons that exist as a separate immiscible phase when in contact with water or air.
