Oxidation-reduction potential

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-020040

1. The electrical potential required to transfer electrons from one compound or element (the oxidant) to another compound or element (the reductant); used as a qualitative measure of the state of oxidation in water treatment systems.

2. The electric potential required to transfer electrons from one compound or element (the oxidant) to another compound (the reductant); used as a qualitative measure of the state of oxidation in water treatment systems.

3. The potential developed by a metallic electrode when placed in a solution containing a species in two different oxidation states.

4. Measure of the tendency of a substance to acquire electrons (chemical reduction). Redox potential is measured in volts (V), or millivolts (mV).
