Payment for Ecosystem Services

1. The variety of arrangements through which the beneficiaries of ecosystem services pay back the providers/protectors of those services. Payments encompass the full spectrum of options including, but not limited to, government incentive programs, mitigation banking programs and/or tax programs.

2. The practice of offering incentives to "ecosystem owners" in exchange for managing their land to provide some sort of ecological service.
