Performance-Based Standard

1. Standards expressed in terms of a desired result or outcome rather than a method, process, or technology.

2. A pollution control standard that requires polluters to meet a source-level emission standard without mandating the specific method by which they must comply with the standard. A performance-based standard is defined in terms of an emission level or an emission rate (i.e., emissions per unit of output or input).
