Photosynthetic stramenopiles

A common name (but used formally) for a group of organisms that are mostly kinds of algae including bacillariophyta; oomycetes; phaeophyceae, and chyrosophyceae. They all contain chloroplasts that are thought to have been derived from the endosymbiosis of ancient red algae.
