1. The time period following the shutdown of a waste management or manufacturing facility; for monitoring purposes, often considered to be 30 years.

2. Period after closure during which owners and operators of solid or hazardous waste disposal units conduct monitoring and maintenance activities in order to preserve the integrity of the disposal system.
