Pound per square inch
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-021792
The conventional unit for measuring pressure is "pound per square inch", which is abbreviated "psi". Pressure can be measured as absolute pressure or gauge pressure. On an absolute scale, the pressure of the atmosphere at the surface of the earth is approximately 14.7 psi: this is psi-absolute (psia). However many gauges are set to read 0 at the surface of the earth, this is 0 psi-gauge (psig). Therefore, the relation between the two is: psig = psia - 14.7.
