Probability Distribution Function
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-022217
A graph that shows the probability of occurrence of an unknown or variable quantity. A PDF is used to characterize a continuous random variable; the integral of all possible values is equal to 1.0 (i.e., the area under the curve). In PRA, PDFs can be used to display the shape of the distribution for an input variable (e.g., normal distribution for ingestion rate) as well as the output from a Monte Carlo simulation (e.g., risk distribution).
