Public Hearing
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-022718
1. A formal meeting wherein EPA officials hear the public's views and concerns about an EPA action or proposal. EPA is required to consider such comments when evaluating its actions. Public hearings must be held upon request during the public comment period.
2. A public hearing is a special type of public meeting. The sole purpose of a public hearing is to provide an opportunity for the public to make comments on a proposed agency decision. A court reporter records all remarks made during the hearing and prepares an official transcript of the proceeding. The agency prepares a Response to Comments (also called a Responsiveness Summary) that contains a response to each issue raised at the public hearing or provided as a written comment during any public comment period on the proposed agency decision. It is not a question and answer session. See Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 124.12, Public Hearings http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/cfr_2004/julqtr/40cfr124.12.htm, for more information.
