purge and trap (device)

Analytical technique (device) used to isolate volatile (purgeable) organics by stripping the compounds from water or soil with a stream of inert gas, trapping the compounds on an adsorbent such as a porous polymer trap, and thermally desorbing the trapped compounds into the gas chromatographic column.
