Refining

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-023528

1. A high temperature process in which impure metal is reacted with flux to reduce the impurities. The metal is collected in a molten layer and the impurities in a slag layer. Refining results in the production of a marketable material.

2. Phase of the steel production cycle during which undesirable elements are removed from the molten steel and alloys are added to reach the final metal chemistry.[40 CRF 60.271a (CFR 2013)] [40 CFR 60.271a (CFR 2024)]
