Renewable Portfolio Standard

1. A renewable portfolio standard (RPS) requires electric utilities and other retail electricity providers to supply a specified minimum percentage (or absolute amount) of customer load with eligible sources of renewable electricity (e.g., 20 percent by 2015).
2. The requirement that an electric power provider generate or purchase a specified percentage of the power it supplies/sells from renewable energy resources, and thereby guarantee a market for electricity generated from renewable energy resources.
