Riffle

1. A rocky shoal or sand bar located just below the surface of the water.
2. A rocky shoal or sandbar lying just below the surface of a waterway. The choppy water created by such sand bars and shoals is also referred to as a riffle.
3. A shallow part of the stream where water flows swiftly over completely or partially submerged obstructions to produce surface agitation.
