Riprap

1. A protective layer or facing of quarrystone placed to prevent erosion, scour, or sloughing of an embankment or cliff.

2. Loose boulders placed on or along the shoreline as a form of armoring.

3. A layer of large uncoursed stone, precast blocks, bags of cement, or other suitable material, generally placed on the slope of an embankment or along a watercourse as protection against wave action, erosion, or scour. Riprap is usually placed by dumping or other mechanical methods, and in some cases is hand placed. It consists of pieces of relatively large size, as distinguished from a gravel blanket.

4. Rock or other large aggregate that is placed to protect streambanks, bridge abutments, or other erodible sites from runoff or wave action.
