Salts
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-024686
1. Minerals that water picks up as it passes through the air, over and under the ground, or from households and industry.
2. Salts (salinity) are minerals that dissolve in water; they can be toxic to freshwater plants and animals and make water unusable for drinking, irrigation, and livestock. Water withdrawals, road de-icing, human and industrial wastewater, fertilizer applications, mining and oil or gas drilling, and repeated use of irrigation water can contribute to high levels of salts.
