Sampling Unit

1. An entity that is subject to selection and characterization under a sampling design. A sample consists of a set of sampling units or sites that will be characterized. Sampling units are defined by the frame; they may correspond to resource units, or they may be artificial units constructed for the sole purpose of the sampling design.
2. The member of the population that may be selected for sampling, such as individual trees, or a specific volume of air or water.
