Science Advisory Board
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-024836
1. A group established by Congress to provide independent scientific and engineering advice to the EPA Administrator on the technical basis for EPA regulations. Expressed in terms of the current parlance of the risk assessment/risk management paradigm of decision making, the SAB deals with risk assessment issues (hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment and risk characterization) and only that portion of risk management that deals strictly with the technical issues associated with various control options.
2. A group of external scientists who advise EPA on science and policy.
3. A federal advisory committee that provides a balanced, expert assessment of scientific matters relevant to the EPA. An important function of the Science Advisory Board is to review EPA's technical programs and research plans.
4. A peer review panel internal to EPA. The Ecological Effects Committee of the SAB conducts reviews of EMAP's overall program and the conceptual framework for integrating EMAP with ORD's Ecological Risk Assessment program. Preparation for SAB reviews is coordinated by the Director of the Office of Modeling, Monitoring systems, and Quality Assurance (OMMSQA); the Assistant Administrator for ORD is responsible for funding. SAB review is considered level 1 peer review.
5. Panel of scientists, engineers, and economists who provide EPA with independent scientific and technical advice.
6. A panel of scientists, engineers, and economists who provide EPA with independent scientific and technical advice.
