Sediment oxygen demand

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-025084

1. The solids discharged to a receiving water are partly organics, and upon settling to the bottom, they decompose anaerobically as well as aerobically, depending on conditions. The oxygen consumed in aerobic decomposition represents another dissolved oxygen sink for the waterbody.

2. Biochemical consumption of dissolved oxygen in overlying waters by decaying sediments across the water-sediment surface.

3. The amount of dissolved oxygen removed from the water covering the sediment in a waterbody because of biological, chemical, and physical processes.
