Setback
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-025322
1. Area between intensive development (i.e., structures) and a protected area (e.g., waterbody or wetland).
2. The requirement that construction be located a minimum distance inland from tidal wetlands, tidal water, the primary dune line, or some other definition of the shore.
3. A distance between a water resource and an activity (e.g., manure spreading) within which the activity cannot be carried out. The purpose of a setback is to reduce the potential for contaminants to reach ground or surface water. Properly managed setbacks improve water quality by acting as filters for water passing over or through the soil toward a water resource.
