Survey

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-027421

1. The collection of information from a common group through interviews or the application of questionnaires to a representative sample of that group.

2. Oil-industry term used for the performance or result of a well-logging operation.

3. A method of data collection that involves asking a fixed set of questions from selected individuals. Key issues involve questionnaire development, (ideally random) sample selection, and nonresponse management.

4. A systematic collection of information or data. A survey can be conducted to collect information from a group of people or from the environment. Surveys of a group of people can be conducted by telephone, by mail, or in person. Some surveys are done by interviewing a group of people [see prevalence survey].

5. A data collection activity involving observation or questionnaires for a sample of a population. (A census is a 100-percent sample survey; it collects information about every member of a population.) Surveys are normally less expensive to conduct than censuses; hence, they may be taken more frequently and can provide an information update between censuses. Often, they are used to collect a wider variety of information than is collected in a census.

6. Surveys involve a (statistically) large number of interviews with respondents, using pre-designed questionnaires. [ESOMAR 2001]

7. A method of data collection that involves asking a fixed set of questions from selected individuals. Key issues involve questionnaire development, (ideally random) sample selection, and nonresponse management. [NIST/SEMATECH 2005b]

8. Systematic canvassing of persons to collect information, often from a representative sample of the population.
