Synoptic Scale System

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-027529

1. (System of) the typical weather map scale that shows features such as high- and low-pressure areas and fronts over a distance spanning a continent. Also called the cyclonic scale. Typically ranging on the scale of 1000 to 2500 kilometers.

2. The spatial scale of the migratory high and low pressure systems of the lower troposphere, with wavelengths of 1000 to 2500 km.

3. (A system) relating to or displaying conditions as they exist simultaneously over a broad area.

4. Large-scale weather systems more than 200 miles across.
