Toxic Release Inventory

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-028386

1. TRI tracks the waste management of certain toxic chemicals that may pose a threat to human health and the environment. U.S. facilities in certain industry sectors must report annually how much of each chemical they release into the environment and/or manage through recycling, energy recovery and treatment, as well as any practices implemented to prevent or reduce the generation of chemical waste.

2. A database of annual toxic releases from certain manufacturers compiled from EPCRA Section 313 reports. Manufacturers must report annually to EPA and the states the amounts of almost 350 toxic chemicals and 22 chemical categories that they release directly to air, water, or land, inject underground, or transfer to off-site facilities. EPA compiles these reports and makes the information available to the public under the "Community Right-to-Know" portion of the law.

3. Database of toxic releases in the United States compiled from SARA Title III Section 313 reports.

4. An EPA dataset that contains information about more than 650 toxic chemicals that are being released into the environment.

5. See http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/qmr.html#toxic. The Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) database, contains information concerning waste management activities and the release of toxic chemicals by facilities that manufacture, process, or otherwise use said materials. Using this information, citizens, businesses, and governments can work together to protect the quality of their land, air, and water.
