upwelling

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-029262

1. The upward movement of an air mass in the atmosphere.

2. Ocean circulation which brings cold, nutrient-rich deep water to the surface, usually occurring along western coasts of continents.

3. The process by which water rises from a deeper to a shallower depth, usually as a result of offshore surface water flow. It is most prominent where persistent wind blows parallel to a coastline so that the resultant Ekman transport moves surface water away from the coast.

4. Upward movement of an air mass in the atmosphere.
