Useful Thermal Energy

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-029401

1. With regard to a cogeneration unit, thermal energy that is:(1) Made available to an industrial or commercial process (not a power production process), excluding any heat contained in condensate return or makeup water;(2) Used in a heating application (e.g., space heating or domestic hot water heating); or(3) Used in a space cooling application (i.e., thermal energy used by an absorption chiller). [40 CFR 97.102 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 97.202 (CFR 2013)]

2. Thermal energy that is:(1) Made available to an industrial or commercial process (not a power production process), excluding any heat contained in condensate return or makeup water;(2) Used in a heating application (e.g., space heating or domestic hot water heating); or(3) Used in a space cooling application (i.e., in an absorption chiller).[40 CFR 97.402 (CFR 2013)][40 CFR 97.502 (CFR 2013)]

3. Thermal energy that is:(1) Made available to an industrial or commercial process (not a power production process), excluding any heat contained in condensate return or makeup water;(2) Used in a heating application (e.g., space heating or domestic hot water heating); or(3) Used in a space cooling application (i.e., in an absorption chiller).

4. Energy (i.e., steam, hot water, or process heat) that meets the minimum operating temperature, flow, and/or pressure required by any energy use system that uses energy provided by the affected boiler or process heater.

5. Energy (i.e., steam or hot water) that meets the minimum operating temperature, flow, and/or pressure required by any energy use system that uses energy provided by the affected boiler.

6. With regard to a cogeneration unit, thermal energy that is: (1) Made available to an industrial or commercial process (not a power production process), excluding any heat contained in condensate return or makeup water; (2) Used in a heating application (e.g., space heating or domestic hot water heating); or (3) Used in a space cooling application (i.e., thermal energy used by an absorption chiller).
