Water Clarity
Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-030025
1. A measure of the amount of sunlight that can penetrate through the water.
2. Measure of the amount of sunlight that can penetrate through the water.
3. When water clarity (turbidity) values are high, it means that the water is cloudy, muddy or opaque (turbid) because of suspended soil particles, algae, microbes, or organic matter. These tiny particles can absorb heat and raise water temperatures, reduce oxygen for aquatic animals, reduce native aquatic plant growth, clog fish gills and smother fish eggs and aquatic insects. If water is described as highly turbid, it also means that only a small amount of light is able to penetrate through the water.
