Water Pool

Term · Environment · MLC-T-ENV-030078

Pools are deep areas of flow that occur at the apex of meanders. Channel cross sections are asymmetrical in bends. They are deep at the outside of the bend at the base of the cut bank and become shallower at the inside of the bend on the point bar. Pools help maintain stream stability by storing stream energy between riffles. Pools typically occur at a spacing of about 5-7 bankfull channel widths.
