1. A vascular plant tissue that conducts water and minerals salts from the roots to the leaves.
2. Plant tissue that carries water up the root and stem. Xylem cell walls derive most of their strength from lignin. The vessels are similar to phloem sieve tubes but lack companion cells and do not have perforated sides and pores.
3. Vascular tissue that conducts water and mineral salts, taken in by roots, throughout the plant, essentially the woody part of the stem or trunk.
