To send off a colleague in the British printing and newspaper trades by banging on metal furniture, tools or desks in the print room or newsroom, traditionally when the person finishes an apprenticeship or retires. The noisy ritual, called banging out, marks the worker's last day and their standing in the trade. The custom is chiefly British.
