Catchline

A temporary label at the top of a page of copy, a galley proof or a layout, made of a word or short phrase that identifies the piece during production but is not printed in the published text. Editors and compositors use it to keep stories and proofs matched to their pages. It differs from a kicker, a short line set above a headline that does appear in print.
