Dandy cart

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006905

A small, unpowered railway vehicle formerly used to transport a horse that had just pulled a train up an incline. On the subsequent downhill section, the horse would ride in the dandy cart, which was attached to the train, conserving its energy for the next uphill pull. This system was prevalent on early mineral and quarry tramways in the 19th century before the widespread adoption of steam locomotives.
