Letterboard

A flat, shallow wooden tray or board, sometimes with a raised edge, used in a composing room for the temporary storage of composed metal type. After type is set, it is transferred from the composing stick to a galley and then may be moved to a letterboard to await imposition or distribution. These boards are stored in racks or cabinets, keeping the type forms organized and protected from damage.
