Foot stick

A metal or wooden bar used in letterpress printing to secure the type within a chase. This tool is placed at the foot of the page form, perpendicular to the composing stick, to hold the lines of type firmly in position. It is tightened with quoins to prevent movement during the printing process, maintaining the integrity of the text block.
